ODYSSEA

AMBIENT ENCLOSED FIREPLACE
for HOXTER

The concept of the ambient enclosed fireplace is inspired by the black monolith from Kubrick’s 2001: Space Odyssey. The assignment was to design an object with an enclosed glass fireplace that would act as a solitary piece in a garden.

In the opening scene of Kubrick’s movie, we see a minimalist totem. Near the totem, wild monkeys discover a bone that can be used as a tool which symbolized the dawn of mankind. In the fireplace, fire cuts through the totem, another symbolic element that humans tamed in the early days of their existence.

The concept works with the chimney issue, which in most respects is an unpleasant technical element. In contrast to trying to disguise this element, I decided to elevate this element to a dominant that defines the essence of the product - the garden totem.
